my character became too much of an asshole

I like messy characters but my GOD do I struggle writing them.

Character pushes people away! Good writing! But how to make them likable enough that it doesn't come across as obnoxious... t

tricky writing.
making characters & stuff
09/27/26
Sort of a continuation for the twitter post I made on this day.

But WOW is it equal parts fun and intimidating writing stuff. I think I have a bit of a perfectionist streak in me, because I keep having to stop myself from rewriting dialogue over and over. But it's just so FUN!

This is my first time writing, so I don't know how worthwhile my thoughts are on this. But the process of thinking of a character, then thinking of the story they'd inhabit, then coming BACK to the character with the story in mind to tighten up the loose screws and make them make sense as a cohesive "whole"? It feels like mental pottery. (That's the best analogy I could think of...)

But also, I fear that if I mold this character too hard, they'll lose the essence that made them stick in my head. What if I overdo it? What if I've tried to sand so many edges that there isn't enough grit? The rocky, bumpy realism that makes something feel authentic?

Then I realise... I'm thinking too hard! Even so, all of these thoughts stem from a place of love - and a place of wanting to do these little people in my head JUSTICE! I may not stick the landing, but I'll work hard enough that I get close.

Also, ideally need to get them out into the world before February... that's when I get super busy. :')

You've read so much you've gone out of bounds!! Oh no!!! Quick, to another category!
